Going to school on the electoral college. Since everyone knows that next Tuesday we are not voting for Trump or Clinton but for Trump electors or Clinton electors, what happens when one of them dies after the vote and before they are sworn in? You may be surprised.
First situation: If the candidate dies after the election and before the electoral college meets, the electoral college electors can vote for anyone they choose.
Second situation: If the candidate dies after the electoral college votes and before congressional certification, the Vice President elect would be sworn in as President.
Third situation: If the candidate dies after congressional certification and before inauguration the Vice President elect becomes President.
What happens if the election ends in a tie? Things get easier and messier, but that is another post.
